T&S supported a European battery technology leader with BMS software, battery architecture and MIL/HIL virtual validation for next-generation railway energy storage (EN50128/EN50657).
As the railway industry accelerates toward more sustainable, energy-efficient mobility, battery technologies are becoming a strategic component of next-generation rolling stock. To support one of Europe's leading battery technology companies, T&S provided end-to-end engineering expertise covering battery development, Battery Management Systems (BMS) and advanced validation environments for railway applications - from onboard energy storage to hybrid propulsion architectures requiring stringent safety, reliability and performance.
The client was developing new-generation lithium-ion battery systems for demanding railway programs, including high-speed train applications. Beyond performance, success depended on guaranteeing operational safety throughout the lifecycle, requiring increasingly sophisticated BMS able to monitor battery health, manage charge and discharge cycles and ensure safe operation under all conditions, while railway projects impose particularly demanding certification and validation requirements that make early verification critical.
T&S deployed multidisciplinary teams combining battery technologies, embedded software, systems engineering and railway validation. Working alongside the client's teams, specialists contributed to next-generation BMS software development and battery system architecture, keeping software behaviour aligned with railway operational and safety requirements. To accelerate verification, T&S designed and implemented Model-in-the-Loop (MIL) and Hardware-in-the-Loop (HIL) environments reproducing realistic operating scenarios, enabling testing of battery-management algorithms, validation of system requirements and assessment of software performance well before full integration. T&S also developed FMI-compliant electrochemical battery models, allowing consistent validation across simulation and testing environments and maximising reuse of engineering assets.
As battery-powered mobility becomes increasingly important for rail, manufacturers must balance innovation with uncompromising safety and reliability. Through its expertise in battery systems, embedded software and virtual validation, T&S helped a leading battery technology company accelerate the development of next-generation railway energy storage while reducing project risk and improving verification efficiency.
